Introduction of switches

Switches are devices that direct traffic over an IP network. Today, routers also often switching functions, while switches are becoming more router-like in their ability to process and handle traffic, and while Cisco makes both fixed and modular lines of Catalyst switches, switch modules can be added to most Cisco routers. Fixed configuration switches are normally 1U units with a fixed set of hardware ports and features, Modular switches are like modular routers - cards are installed to provide the functionality needed - typically a CPU-type card, power supplies, and trunks cards. Currently, 29XX, 35XX, and 37XX series are 1U/1.5U fixed configuration switches, while the 45XX and 65XX are modular switches with varying expandibility. Choosing the appropriate switch can be confusing - to learn more about Cisco Catalyst Switches, click on this link.
